3 models of Mesopotamian demonology

Laura Knight-Jadczyk, From Utukku to UFOs: Mesopotamian Demons Revisited

Laura Knight-Jadczyk has done some excellent research into the history of demonology as portrayed in Babylonian texts, Chaldean astrology, and the Enochian literature. A key insight comes from Henryk Drawnel, an expert in Enochian literature, that Enochian literature drew from the Utukku Lemnutu but ascribed demonic behavior to the giants, the offspring of fallen angels, rather than a preexisting extradimensional domain.

This Enochian inversion of the Babylonian demonic model is central to understanding that the biblical writers appropriated and distorted the Babylonian asipu/apkallu sages from being exorcists/priests fighting demons to being the cause of demonic problems. The figure of Enoch replaces the Babylonian demonic knowledge/countermeasure model with another line of “purified transmission” from his angelic encounters ascribing sin to rebellious angels, a sin which only the god YHWH can rectify.

Judaism thus replaced the Babylonian gnosis model of armature against demons with a salvation model relying on worship of YHWH. Judaism replaced individual knowledge, will, and effort to guard against demonic influence with a passive faith model in an exterior power. The Catholics later restricted exorcisms to selected priests, discouraged the faithful from investigating occult phenomena, and reinterpreted gods and goddesses as demons.

Laura cites the work of William J. Baldwin, inventor of Spirit Release Therapy, who proposed that 70 to 100 percent of the present population are influenced by discarnate entities, who may be demons or extraterrestrials. Baldwin believes that sexual contact might be a mode of transmission of demons from one person to another, and sexual abuse is a forced opening for demonic invasion, hence its ritualistic use by an elite class who themselves are possessed.
