Friedrich Delitzsch (1850–1922) was a German Assyriologist who delivered 3 famous lectures from 1902 to 1904 titled Babel und Bible in which he revealed that Babylonian texts were the basis for Hebrew Bible narratives. Today this borrowing from Babylonian and Sumerian sources is well understood, but at that time most Christians, and probably most jews, believed the Bible was “divinely authored” or at least “divinely inspired” and constituted a description of real history. Delitzsch’s book The Great Deception further characterized the Hebrew Bible as consisting of historical fabrications, exaggerations, and a twisting of Babylonian scriptures to place Israel and Yahweh at the center of Mesopotamian history. Delitzsch wanted Christians to separate themselves from the Hebrew Bible to evolve to a higher morality. Of course this never happened, but Delitzsch was a pioneer in Middle Eastern studies who prepared Germany to understand the Hebrew Bible was fake and the jews were following a genocidal anti-Aryan god.
