Gordon Edwards, "DDT: A Case Study in Scientific Fraud," Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, Fall, 2004. DDT prevented about 50 million deaths following World War II through prevention of malaria. The banning of DDT in the 1960s has led to the deaths of millions of people worldwide. Rachel Carson led the movement to ban DDT by falsely charging that DDT thinned the eggs shells of birds, leading to U.S. government declaration of the bald eagle as an endangered species. The Environmental Defense Fund, the Sierra Club, and the National Audubon Society led the fight to ban DDT exports. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists fed birds for 112 days on a diet with 100 times as much DDT as they were getting from the environment. No thinning of egg shells was found. The DDT had no effect on the birds. It has been proven that DDT does not cause cancer or harm to any part of the ecosystem, but the belief persists among the public that DDT is dangerous. Phony, politicized environmentalism is responsible for the death of millions of people. Edwards also exposed fraudulent scientific studies involving acid rain, ozone holes, ultraviolet radiation, carbon dioxide, global warming, and pesticides. John P.A. Ioannidis, "Contradicted and Initially Stronger Effects in Highly Cited Clinical Research," Journal of the American Medical Association, July 13, 2005. About one-third of published scientific studies turn out to be wrong, according to later follow-up studies. Fraud is still one of the biggest problems in science.
